Itinerary
We meet at the airport at 4.45am for our KM Malta Airlines flight to Munich departing at 7.15am and arriving at 9.45am. Upon arrival, our coach takes us to visit Nymphenburg Palace and Grounds (entrance extra). This baroque majestic building served as the main summer residence for the former rulers of Bavaria. We then proceed to Munich centre to experience a magical Christmas Market in Marienplatz. This traditional activity dates back to the 14th century. The decorated stalls, mulled wine, and the spicy scent of cinnamon and cloves together with the 25 metre-high decorated Christmas tree with 3,000 candles attract thousands of visitors each year. Afterwards, we will check-in at our 3-star Hotel Mirabell.
Today’s excursion takes us on the Romantic Road heading to Augsburg. This town is one of the oldest and most historically significant towns in Germany. We see some of the most popular attractions such as the Augsburger Rathaus (city hall), and the 11th century Roman Catholic Cathedral. We’ll have an opportunity to stroll around the Town Hall Square with wooden booths beautifully decorated for Christmas, offering traditional crafts, Yuletide decorations, and gingerbread sweets complemented with mulled wine. In the afternoon we drive back to Munich centre towards Marienplatz. We will have time to go around and watch the famous Chiming Glockenspiel, a large mechanical clock located on the facade of the Town Hall which at 5.00pm re-enacts scenes from Munich’s history. We will then enjoy the enchanting Christmas Market, and have time for shopping and personal sightseeing - mainly the Hofbrauhaus, the well-known Bavarian hall founded in 1589 with its typical beer gardens.
We board the coach for our full-day excursion which will take us to Salzburg in bordering Austria. Our first stop will be in Mirabel Gardens. We then walk over Makarsteg Bridge towards the city’s historic centre. Here we see Mozart’s birthplace, St Peter’s Abbey and the cemetery, made famous in the musical movie “The Sound of Music”. During our stay in Salzburg we can enjoy the historic Christmas Markets in Domplatz and Residenzplatz, considered as the oldest and most beautiful markets in the world.
After breakfast, we’ll check out from the hotel and begin our journey to Passau to embark on our 4-star river cruise – MS VIVA TWO. We will settle into our cabins and begin our unforgettable river cruise experience. During this cruise, we will discover the cultural highlights of four of the most fascinating cities along the Danube that shine in a very special light during Advent.
In the afternoon, we will arrive in Vienna, the capital city of Austria. The city offers an enchanting combination of architecture, world-famous museums and theatres and beautiful green spaces. One may stroll through the magnificent boulevards, admire St. Stephen's Cathedral and enjoy a slice of Sacher cake in a traditional coffee house. Optional Excursion – Vienna City Tour
This morning, we will arrive in the picturesque town of Dürnstein, located in the heart of the Wachau Valley along the Danube and surrounded by vineyards. As we approach, we will enjoy stunning views of its two iconic landmarks: the hilltop ruins of Kuenringerburg Castle and the Dürnstein Abbey. We then continue cruising through the scenic Wachau region toward Melk. Before arrival, the Melk Abbey comes into view, perched high above the Danube, an unforgettable sight that signals our approach to this historic town. Today we will visit Linz, which offers a delightful blend of history, culture, and scenic charm. The city’s vibrant Hauptplatz—one of the largest squares in Austria—is lined with elegant baroque façades, inviting churches, and quaint boutiques, perfect for a relaxed stroll through the Old Town. Be sure to sample the iconic Linzer Torte, a local specialty famous for its rich flavor and lattice crust. For sweeping views over the city and river, head up to Pöstlingberg, easily reached on foot or via the charming Pöstlingbergbahn. Optional Excursion – Linz Walking Tour and/or Český Krumlov
After breakfast, we will disembark and make our way Regensburg. This Bavarian city on the River Danube, is known for its well-preserved medieval core. Here we will enjoy the town’s festive atmosphere Christmas Market offering a scenic, exclusive experience while tasting bratwurst, mulled wine and gingerbread. Later in the afternoon we will make our way to Munich airport for our KM Malta Airlines flight departing at 7pm and arriving in Malta at 9.20pm.
